General tips for finding and applying for a graduate job in Vietnam

GENERAL TIPS

According to Vietnam’s labour market update by the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, young graduates from colleges and universities face an alarming unemployment rate of 20.75%. Intense competition requires graduates to make themselves stand out from the others. The following tips would be helpful in the application process.

1.    Cover letter

A cover letter is often sent with CV to provide detailed information why you are qualified for the job you are applying for. A good cover letter should explain the reason why you are interested in the specific position/ organization and identify your most relevant skills and experiences. In general, a cover letter should not be longer than 1 page and is comprised of following parts:

•    Contact information
•    Employer contact information
•    Cover Letter Salutation
•    Body of Cover Letter
-    Paragraph 1: Introduction: You can introduce about yourself and value you will bring to the company applying.
-    Paragraph 2: Body: Present skills, experience, education as well as achievement you gained.
-    Paragraph 3: Closing: Show your expectation  and passion sincerely when you work in company.

2.    Curriculum Vitae (CV)

CV is a summary of a person’s educational and professional history. A standard CV should not be longer than two sides of A4 and include the following basic information:

•    Contact detail -  Name, address, email, phone number
•    Education background
•    Working experience
•    Social activities
•    Skills - For example: team work, communication, time management, specific IT skills
•    Reference

There is no “best” CV. However, the following rules should be applied:

•    Clearly structured: logically ordered, easy to read
•    Informative but concise
•    Accurate in spelling and grammar

3.    Interviews

Only a small proportion of candidates are selected to the interview. So normally this is the last step for the interviewer to see wether you match the job requirements. In the interview, you are most likely to show your personalities, qualities, motivation and enthusiasim for the job. The advice would be: be yourself. However, several notices would help you make the most of your opportunity.

•    Research the employer and the position
•    Re-read your application
•    Think about possible question that can be asked
•    Appear professional with business-wear
